- Hello! My name is Mrs. Kerr and I am the head of Art & Design at St. Jude's Academy. I hold an Honours Bachelor Degree in English and Visual Arts from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor of Education from Queen's University. My interests include: travel, 19th century literature, rugby, ice hockey, bluegrass music, mixed media art & art history.

SK ART
- Today students listed several emotions that we have been discussing over the course of the past two weeks. We then paired each emotion with a corresponding colour.
- Students then wrote down emotions that they were currently feeling and coloured their hearts to depict how much of that emotion they were feeling.
- We also learned how to use the classroom pencil sharpener!
GR. 8 DESIGN
- Students were introduced to the concept of the Design Brief.
*Students are to bring laptops and chargers to every Design class moving forward. Also, phones are to stay in lockers during class time.
GR. 7 DESIGN
- Students continued working on their Elements & Principles of Design posters.

- Students completed a reflection regarding the following BBC article:

- Today students participated in a drama activity called Emotional Animals. Each student chose an animal and emotion and students were asked to portray this animal and feeling/emotion while moving around the classroom.

- Today students began working on a Cubism activity in which they are to draw/use a photo to break apart into geometric shapes and piece back together in the Cubist style.

- Today students were introduced to the artistic period/style of Cubism.
- Students were asked questions, discussed, and analyzed various artists and artworks from the time period.
Homework (Due next class): Students are to create a two-page spread to visualize Cubism and answer the questions posted in the image below. They may also use the PPT attached for reference. Students are also asked to bring a colour print of an 8.5 x 11 image next class.

- Students were given their "Great Choices" cards to decorate. Students will receive a hole punch in their card each time they make a great decision in class. Once they have made 20 great decisions they will receive a prize from the prize box!

GR. 8 DESIGN
- Students began the Inquiring and Analyzing stage of the Design Cycle for their new simple invention project. They are to recognize an everyday problem that could be solved by a simple invention solution. Students focused on the following in today's class:
- Explaining and Justifying the Need for a solution to the problem that they have chosen.
- Identifying and Prioritizing the Research needed to come up with a solution to the problem.
- Analyzing Existing Products to both compare and contrast to their ideas.
Homework Due Next Class: Mind Map (Explaining and Justifying the Need)
- 7 Mind Map ideas of everyday problems
- Top 3 Choices - point form, explain and justify the need for a solution to that problem.

- Today students participated in a Think-Pair-Share activity where they discussed their Simple Invention Research Assignment with a partner and answered the following questions in their process journals:
- What is the name of your partner's chosen simple invention?
- What does their chosen simple invention do?
- Do you agree that it is a simple invention? Why or why not?
- Would you use this product? Why or why not?
- Students then worked in Mastermind groups to come up with innovative solutions to every-day problems.

- Today we reinforced our classroom mood metre and rules of the art room
- We reviewed our "ABC's"
- The rest of class time was used for "Free-Draw Friday" where students utilize their creative skills and are encouraged to draw something of interest to them.

- Today we listened to the first section of our book "Girl in Hyancinth Blue." Students will be read to at the beginning of each class to expand their creative thinking skills and will be asked to reflect on their ideas/opinions within their process journals.
Girl in Hyacinth Blue tells the story of an imaginary painting by Vermeer, and the aspirations and longings of those whose lives it illuminates, and darkens.
- Students used the rest of class time to research their chosen college/university arts/arts-related programs and portfolio requirements for said programs.
*Due Monday: Breakdown of interested programs and list of portfolio requirements for each program.
